Tia Betty

Betty is what the boys on the streets of Medellin call her. But she's not Betty, and she's not Colombian. Bethany, from the great state of Iowa, has been working in Colombia for the last year. She just finished her term and headed back home. On the way back to Iowa, she stopped in for a 'debrief' visit. That's where we wrap things up, and go over how things went on the field, and what to expect back home... Bethany and I had an awesome couple of days here. Last time she came (to volunteer at the office over Christmas break), she stayed with me and we went on what I call the 'food tour' of Miami. Versailles. Japanese sushi. Knaus Berry Farm. Thai Rama. Rio Cristal. My kitchen... and much more. This time the food was probably not as exciting- Flanigan's, my kitchen, Quizno's, my kitchen again. She was a good sport. Last time, we went to Bill Baggs on Key Biscayne. About 3 minutes after we got in the water, she was all tangled up in a man-o-war. We ended up at Mercy hospital for about the next 3 hours. This time, we went to Key Biscayne again (I know, crazy) and were sharing the beach with about 388 other people and some sand fleas. At least we didnt get stung. Then again, it's kinda hard to get stung at Crandon Park during low tide. We had to walk about a mile to get past our ankles in water. I tried to swim back to shore. I got 'beached' about 50 yards out from shore. haha. What man-o-war could possibly swim around in that? Oh, and it was raining. It's a wonder she trusted me enough to let me take her to Vizcaya and Pinecrest Gardens. Yes, pinecrest gardens. The place I took people last week. What can I say? It's my new favorite. The Grove used to be my favorite place to take tourists. Now it's the Gardens. Pretty... And Vizcaya makes amazing (unfortunately expensive) smoothies. Try one sometime. The best part about Vizcaya, though, as you already know... is the awesome pictures you can get. And after about 112 tries, I finally caught a butterfly- in flight! (Can you see it?)

Before she left, I made her breakfast in bed. Waffles, o.j. cuban coffee, yum...
