I need a mandoline tutor

I am in awe of what comes out of a mandoline. In goes dirty, boring produce... out comes julienned carrots, paper-thin sliced tomatoes, minced onion and chopped zucchini. WOW. I want that. I love julienned veggies. I can think of a million things to do with those produce products.
However...
I can't work a stupid mandoline! Not only do they seem very complicated to me, but I am afraid I might lose a finger, or worse, a HAND to this contraption. One of my favorite relatives, out of the kindness of their hearts, and knowledge of how I love kitchen gadgets, gave me a wonderful mandoline. I've only touched it twice. Even then, I only touched it. I've never actually used it. Again, because I fear for my extremities, and because I lack the brain power or know-how to figure it out.
Can anybody help? I need a mandoline tutor!!!
